Norfolk Flooding
I was in Norfolk tonight, and I knew the water levels would be up, but wasn’t expecting any street flooding. It was just after high tide, and the wind driven tide, combined to cause some minor street flooding in the low parts of Norfolk. I did my best with the pictures, but I forgot to bring my tripod, so I had to use my truck as well as the ground in the declining light. For normal levels you can check out some pictures from HamptonRoadsLife, another project of mine…
Texas Innovation
I found this bit of Hurricane preparedness, from KTRK Channel 13 in Houston…
You have to wonder what they were thinking…
Was it incase the wind blew the car away.
Was it to prevent the car from floating away in flooding.
I am pretty sure that he carpet over the roof was to fend off flying debris.
I have to believe there were quantities of beer involved in the planning and implementation, or they have done it for years, and haven’t lost a car yet.
It would be nice to know how the car came out…
No commentsI Still Cant Believe It
Watching Sunday Night Football tonight, once again reminded me of why I hate network television affiliates, and the garbage they spew. WAVY is in the process of trying to make something out of nothing once again, with their latest promo. I believe the quote was “WAVY TV protecting you from the threat that was Hanna”, what is that supposed to mean…
I didn’t see it myself, but I was told that during one of the regular interruptions at ~9AM when it was clear that Hanna was not a real threat that WAVY was saying that the worst was yet to come…
It is the overselling of events like tropical storms by whomever, causes the complacency that causes people to ignore legitimate warnings a real threat at a later date. It was our friend Mayor of New Orleans the was quoted as saying that Gustav was the “Storm of the Century” and “The Mother of all storms”
So now we have Hurricane Ike hitting Cuba, and as of the 11PM NHC update. and the Southerly trend has stopped, and the 120Hr forecast looks like the current landfall is the Texas Louisiana border, and if this storm continues what will the fear mongers call this one, cant use the the ones used for Gustav, or can they. Just like the local furniture store ads, that have the sale of the year at least once a month, and is closing their mattress department…
No commentsBest Guess for Hanna…
Okay my money is on 45MPH peak wind at ORF, and Dave is saying 54MPH, while Annie split the difference at 49MPH..
I am guessing that in SE Virginia Beach we are going to see maybe 2.5 to 3.0 inches of rain, and no more then 45MPh on the wind…
No commentsThings Aren’t Like They Used To Be…
I was walking in to work this morning, thinking that it such a beautiful day, and how much it would change, not only in the next few hours but also in the 24 hours.
I thought of what it must have been like in the past when storms such were approaching, and you had no idea what was in store. Now we know that the center of Hanna will pass the hampton roads area around 2PM Saturday afternoon, with winds in the 30’s and 40’s.
