PRECIPITATION MOVES INTO HAMPTON ROADS EARLIER THAN EXPECTED BRINGING A LIGHT SNOW ACCUMULATION… MILDER AIR MOVES INTO THE REGION CHANGING THE SNOW TO A MIX AND THEN RAIN… TUESDAY WILL BE MUCH WARMER WITH RAIN IN THE MORNING… WEDNESDAY SHOULD BE DRY WITH SEASONAL TEMPERATURES

Precipitation began earlier than expected overnight which meant that snow fell across Hampton Roads since it was still very cold. This sometimes occurs when strong upper-level winds cause overrunning precipitation to break out well ahead of the approaching low pressure system. The strong high pressure area that brought the frigid conditions didn’t even have a chance to leave. Warm and moist air is lighter than cold dry air so it rises above it causing condensation and then precipitation. It looks like about an inch of snow fell in my neighborhood and it has now stopped. As milder air moves in from off the Atlantic, we will see the precipitation change to sleet and then rain from SE to NW during the day today. If you are traveling to the Piedmont region of VA, the changeover will take longer to occur. Freezing rain is also possible in parts of VA as the cold air at the surface may be hard to dislodge. Much warmer air is expected to arrive on Tuesday along with a good chance of rain. As it looks right now, the rain should occur during the morning and mid-day hours. The rain should end during the afternoon. Thunder is possible in some spots. The cold front responsible for the rain tomorrow will sweep offshore resulting in clearing skies. Wednesday should be dry and seasonal. That’s it for now. Thanks for reading and have a great day!
