HIGH PRESSURE CENTERED OVER MINNESOTA BRINGS THE COLDEST TEMPERATURES OF THE SEASON TO HAMPTON ROADS… A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO BRING RAIN ON MONDAY AND TUESDAY WITH WARMER TEMPERATURES

Well, I think the computer models (and the local TV meteorologists) did very well predicting the snowfall on Friday. Many school systems closed early which enabled school staff and students to get home before the snow started. Despite temperatures that were just under freezing Friday afternoon, the snow didn’t stick that much to the roadways in my local area. The sun angle is getting higher and higher in the sky so this can impact whether snow will stick to the pavement during the daylight hours, even though the skies are overcast. Had the snow continued into the night, it would have stuck to the roads creating a much┬ámore hazardous situation. Strong northwesterly winds are ushering in what should be the coldest temperatures of the season. Temperatures may not get over the freezing point today and will drop into the teens tonight. Temperatures on Sunday will be even colder but the winds should be diminishing. You should take the necessary precautions to prevent your water pipes from freezing. A low pressure system approaching from the southwest should bring rain on Monday (President’s Day). Some mixed precipitation is possible at the start in some areas. However, milder air will be arriving which should make this a mostly rain event for Hampton Roads. As it looks right now, Tuesday will be a rather wet and breezy day with mild temperatures. Have a great weekend and try to stay warm!
