AFTER A RATHER MILD SATURDAY, TEMPERATURES WILL BE TRENDING DOWNWARD OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS… BITTERLY COLD TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED EARLY NEXT WEEK… SOME PARTS OF VIRGINIA MAY SEE SOME SNOW ON SUNDAY

The low pressure system that moved northeastward Friday night brought heavy rain at times to parts of the area. Also, since the low was intensifying so rapidly, winds increased quite a bit. The low pressure area is moving away and we should see a decent day today (Saturday). Temperatures will be on the mild side for this time of year. The average high temperature for this time of year is 48 degrees. Our high temperature should be around 10 degrees above that today. Another low pressure system is expected to develop in the Gulf States but this low is expected to take a more southern track taking the heaviest precipitation well south and east of our area. However, there should be enough upper-level support and moisture to bring Hampton Roads some light precipitation on Sunday. Also, a frontal system will be moving through the region. It should be warm enough for mostly rain event. However, areas to our north and west may see some snow mix in. Any snow that falls should only stick to grassy surfaces, roofs, etc. Forecasters do not expect any problems with the roads on Sunday from frozen precipitation here in Hampton Roads as temperatures should be above freezing. A strong cold front will be moving into the region on Sunday night. Behind this front, temperatures will be well below normal making for a very chilly period for us. Temperatures will slowly moderate during the middle of the week… We are now entering the time of year when the average temperature is the coldest of the year. In approximately two to three weeks, the average temperature begins to climb again as the weather responds to the slowly increasing amount of daylight and the sun getting higher and higher in the sky… You’ve probably heard about the hurricane in the Eastern Atlantic this past week. Hurricane Alex is no more but it was the earliest hurricane to develop in the Atlantic Basin in several decades. The storm impacted the Azores. Very unusual, indeed! So, enjoy the mild temperatures on Saturday while you can and get ready for the big chill. That’s it for now. Thanks for reading and have a great day!
