GET READY FOR A MAJOR CHANGE IN THE WEATHER… THE COLDEST AIR OF THE SEASON IS ON ITS WAY… HOWEVER, IT WILL NOT STICK AROUND THAT LONG

Happy New Year! For Norfolk, December was the 8th warmest on record. December of 2010 was the 4th coldest. The warmth of late will soon be memory as a major blast of cold air moves into Hampton Roads. Low temperatures Tuesday night are expected to be near 20 degrees! I would suggest that you take down your Christmas decorations today (Sunday) since it will be the last really warm day for a while. The cold spell will not last that long as the pattern will result in warmer air (perhaps even above normal temperatures) returning to the area by later in the week. The reason is that there is no real blocking downstream. No significant precipitation is expected this week. There may be a storm system developing off the coast as the cold front moves offshore but this is only expected to bring a flurry or two to the coastal areas. The cold front itself is not expected to cause much in the way of shower activity, but there may be a shower or sprinkle in some spots. I’ll have an update on Monday.
