THE INTENSE HEAT CONTINUES BUT SOME RELIEF IS ON THE WAY… THE HIGH PRESSURE RIDGES WEAKENS A BIT BUT WILL WE SEE A RETURN TO THE UNBEARABLE CONDITIONS NEXT WEEK?

When the temperature at 7:00 AM is in the low 80’s, and the dew point is in the mid 70’s, you know that a brutal day is ahead, especially when there will be abundant sunshine throughout the day.  On Friday, the high temperature at ORF reached 102 degrees, which was a record high for the day. Did you hear about Newark, N.J.? Their high temperature on Friday was 108, which was an all time record!!! When will this heat wave end? Well, Saturday is expected to be another brutal day with high temperatures reaching around 100 degrees. There may be an isolated shower or storm but odds are you will not see one. Sunday should be a little better and there may be a shower or thunderstorm in spots. Monday should be even cooler with another chance of a shower or storm, but it will still be warm and muggy. A frontal boundary should bring some relief from the heat and humidity by mid-week, but forecasters think that another period of above normal temperatures is possible by later next week. Not sure if it will be as bad as it is now.

What about the tropics? The Atlantic Basin became active earlier in the week as we had Tropical Storm Bret develop off the Southeast Coast. And then we had Cindy, which was a tropical storm that developed further out and is now moving harmlessly away in the far northern Atlantic Ocean. None of these storms were ever a threat to the United States. Note that there is another area of disturbed weather that is being watched near the Lesser Antilles.

So, remember that this heat can be very dangerous and not just for the elderly and the infants. Take it easy out there and stay hydrated. Thanks for reading and I’ll have an update on Sunday.
