LOW PRESSURE AREA APPROACHING FROM THE WEST SHOULD BRING SOME RAIN LATE ON MONDAY… THE WEEK AHEAD SHOULD BE A CHILLY ONE WITH DRY WEATHER FOR THE MOST PART

The low pressure area that will be moving by to our north later Monday shouldn’t cause too many problems for us here in Hampton Roads.  Light rain should overspread Hampton Roads late in the day. Temperatures will be rising into the 40′s with a southwest wind out ahead of the low pressure/cold front. No snow is anticipated anywhere in the Hampton Roads region. Note that as the low moves off the South Jersey coastline, a secondary low will develop and intensify possibly bringing a significant snowstorm to parts of New England. Following this system, the weather should be fairly quiet for most of this week. Skies should be sunny with just some cloudiness at times. Temperatures will be cold but not severely cold. Compared to what we’ve endured of late, I think that this week will be easy to take. As we get towards the weekend, a system may bring us precipitation… There are now signs that the overall pattern that has been keeping us in the “deep freeze” is going to change. Folks in the Mid-Atlantic states will be glad to see a change in the pattern. Even snow lovers have probably had enough of the white stuff. However, there is plenty of winter to go and we still may see some more winter weather trouble before it’s all said and done.

SUNDAY WILL BE SUNNY AND A BIT WARMER… MONDAY MAY BE WET, BUT HOW WET IT WILL BE IS STILL IN QUESTION… MONDAY SHOULD BE EVEN MILDER AS A SOUTHWESTERLY WIND DEVELOPS

After a chilly start, Sunday will be a little warmer with temperatures peaking out in the 40′s. Sunshine should be plentiful. A low pressure system will be approaching on Monday, thus bringing more clouds and possibly some rain or showers. Forecasters are not sure how much rain will fall on Monday as there are a few different scenarious still possible. A period of steady rain is possible well ahead of the cold front. It is also possible that this steady rain will develop to our southeast and miss the area. The cold front itself may have some rain or showers along it as it moves through the region. Either way, forecasters don’t anticipate a lot of rain with this system. Precipitation will be in the liquid form since temperatures are expected to be well into the 40′s on Monday. Winds will be mostly out of the SW out ahead of the cold front, which is why temperatures will be warmer than its been… despite the clouds. Tuesday looks nice as the system moves northeastward away from Hampton Roads. I’ll have an update on Monday.

THE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM THAT CAUSED SNOW ACROSS THE SOUTHEAST IS MOVING OUT TO SEA… DRY WEATHER SHOULD LAST THROUGH SUNDAY, BUT ON MONDAY, WE COULD SEE MORE PRECIPITATION

The low pressure system that brought snow to cities like Dallas, TX,  Atlanta, GA. Mobile, AL is now moving out to sea and it is intensifying. I received a dusting in my VA Beach neighborhood, which is basically what was predicted. No major problems have been reported here in Hampton Roads. To our south in NE NC, more snow fell. Aside from a flurry, I don’t think we will see additional snow today. Skies should slowly clear today and tonight. On Sunday, temperatures move up a bit to around 40 for a high with sunny skies. Another storm system will be approaching Sunday night increasing our clouds and by Monday, rain should be spreading across the region. Later on Monday, there is a chance that the rain could change to snow, but as it stands now, no major problems are expected. Warmer air should spread north as southerly winds will blow out ahead of this system on Monday. Did you know that there is snow on the ground in 49 states? Even the panhandle of Florida had some snow. Hawaii is the only state with no reported snow on the ground. When will this wintry pattern end? Forecasters aren’t sure but based on what I’ve been seeing, we have a few more weeks left of some very active and chilly weather. I’ll have an update on Sunday.

FORECASTERS ARE CLOSELY WATCHING A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM THAT IS EXPECTED TO MOVE ACROSS FLORIDA THIS WEEKEND… ANOTHER STORM SYSTEM MAY AFFECT HAMPTON ROADS ON MONDAY… WHEN IS THIS PATTERN GOING TO END?

This is truly an incredible winter for the Mid-Atlantic states. Washington D.C , Philadelphia and Baltimore have seen their snowiest winter in recorded history and winter is far from over! The cold has been unrelenting and no real warm-up is in sight. Currently, forecasters are watching a low pressure system that is going to develop in the Western Gulf of Mexico. This low is going to move across Florida and it is expected to cause snow to areas that rarely get snow in the Southeastern states. Over the last few days, the models have been trending northward but not far enough north to bring Hampton Roads significant snow… but stay tuned! It is still possible that the northern edge of this system causes some snow across our southern most areas. You should monitor your local media and the NWS for updates throughout the day on Friday. Another system may affect the region on Monday, but I’ll have more on that system on Saturday. If you’re wondering when this cold and stormy pattern is going to end, there are no easy answers. The pattern may last the remainder of this month.

THE STORM PULLS AWAY BUT COLD AIR MOVES IN ITS WAKE… ANOTHER LOW PRESSURE AREA APPROACHES ON TUESDAY BRINGING A CHANCE OF RAIN OR SHOWERS

The intense storm system that brought up to 40 inches of snow to parts of Maryland has moved out to sea. My VA Beach neighborhood picked up about an inch of snow on Saturday. The NNW flow behind the low pressure area will keep us on the chilly side on Sunday, but there will be some sunshine. I would stay off the roads if you can until the afternoon as there is plenty of ice and packed snow on some of the roadways. Although temperatures will probably not rise much above freezing, the sun should melt some of the ice on the roads. Areas in the shade will remain frozen throughout Sunday. Monday will be dry but already another low pressure area will be approaching from the west. This system seems to be tracking a bit further north than its predecessor so rain (not snow) seems likely on Tuesday here in Hampton Roads. Further north, another snow event is likely and believe me, they don’t need it. The weekend storm brought incredible snow amounts to many regions of the northern Mid-Atlantic States. Philadelphia had 27 inches of snow, which makes this storm their second highest snowfall in recorded history. NYC had less than in inch of snow while the Jersey Shore got slammed with blizzard conditions. There was a sharp cut-off to the snow accumulation up there. Washington DC will be digging out for days as will many of the communities in the region. DC had about 20 inches. The stormy weather pattern should continue throughout most of February. California has been dealing with mudslides due to heavy rain hitting areas that were affected by the fires last year.
