An approaching weak cold front may bring some rather nasty storms to SE VA this afternoon (Sunday). Very humid conditions will result in some areas receiving very heavy rainfall rates. I’m hoping that my neighborhood gets significant rain as we’ve been missed repeatedly by the storms that blew through Hampton Roads over the past week or so. The afternoon and evening are prime time for the storms to occur. Please be alert for rapidly changing conditions. Things should quiet down later tonight and Monday should not be that bad, although an isolated storm is possible. At this time of year, cold fronts usually have trouble moving through our part of the world and many times they stall and dissipate over our region or just south and east of here over the coastal Carolinas. This is due to several factors including the positioning of the jet stream and the strength of the Bermuda High. Also, the cool/dry air masses and their associated high pressure areas are not that forceful at this time of year. What about the tropics? Things remain quiet as conditions are just too hostile to support development. That could change over the next couple of weeks. We’ll see. So the bottom line is that Sunday will be very humid with an increasing chance of showers and thunderstorms. I’ll have an update on Monday morning.

Hello everyone, I’m back. I had a bad case of pneumonia which is why I haven’t posted the past several weeks… Well, as the headline states, the muggy weather will continue for several days. A frontal system will stall out over our region this weekend keeping us in an unsettled weather pattern. However, rain chances will vary as you head NW to SE. Our most northwestern areas shouldn’t see any showers today (Saturday) while our southeastern regions (i.e. NE NC) will have a good chance of showers/thunderstorms. A disturbance will increase our rain chances on Sunday and Monday. I want to comment on my local VA Beach neighborhood and how we have missed out on all of the storms that have moved through Hampton Roads over the past several days. All I’ve picked up in my backyard is really trace amounts over the past week while some parts of Hampton Roads have had a good soaking. Last evening, a fairly decent area of showers were heading in only to dissipate before reaching Southside Hampton Roads. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we see some rain this weekend. So, the bottom line is that with all the clouds around, we shouldn’t be as warm as we were on Friday. However, the humidity will be high so it will feel uncomfortable. The tropical Atlantic remains quiet.  I’ll have an update on Sunday.
